Helene's impacts – particularly flooding and landslides – have made it one of the deadliest US storms of the 21st century, with more than 100 confirmed deaths in North Carolina alone. North Carolina was severely impacted by Hurricane Helene during late September 2024, primarily in its western Appalachian region, causing at least 105 reported deaths and significant destruction of infrastructure and residential areas across several settlements. According to state estimates, the remnants of the September hurricane damaged or destroyed more than 70,000 homes across the Tar Heel State, with most of the destruction caused by flash flooding.
Luther Cifers and a group of 10 brave Virginians created a mission to NC to help people in need: Kenny Green, Chris Poe, Logan Green, Josh Race, Bill Hofford, Chuck Earls, Jonathan Peyton and Caleb Peyton, and the youngest Atley. They pulled there several tractors, trucks, several generators, 40 Portable Shower Bags, food and blankets and organized a mission from 14 to 18 October 2024. They cleared roads, made drains to drain farmland, and raked access roads to homes.
Foundations collected more than $15,000 of donations for helping NC residents.
